Brief Introduction

Each March residents of the Huvsgul Lake area celebrate the Festival of the Ice. The festival involves a great variety of activities and competitions, including Ice Sumo, Ger building with ice, ice skating and sleigh rides, all on or by the shores of the beautiful Lake Khuvsgul. This two-day event is also a shamanist (local shaman believes) ceremony of offering and provides a fascinating insight into the Tsaatan people's way of life.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1 (2nd March)– Flights to Northern Mongolia (Khuvsgul Lake)

Upon arrival at the Chinggis Khaan Airport, fly North of Mongolia for an hour and 30 minutes, you will arrive at Khuvsgul, a small town North of Mongolia. Transfers and arrangements will be made with your English-speaking guide and local driver meeting you at the airport. Khuvsgul Lake is 1,645m above sea level, 136km long and 262m deep. It is the second-most voluminous fresh water lake in Asia and 1.5% of all the fresh water in the world. The water is crystal clear where you can see bottom of lake when you go sailing across. The lake is also surround by deep forest and magnificent mountains.

Lunch will be served at the camp restaurant, which is located beside the lake. Next half of the day will be spend free and easy for you to explore the lake and its surrounding. Feel free to hike at the surrounding hills, or swim in the lake and enjoy the natural beauty of the region. All meals will be local fare served from the camp restaurant and accommodations at your choice of camp, Gers or hotel.

Day 2 (3rd March) – The Ice Festival Opening Ceremony

Be entertained at the opening Ceremony of the Ice Festival and International Skating event. Dogs on Sled, contest for “Beautiful Mongolian Costume”, along with skating, and sculptures competition are amongst the event. Enjoy the wilderness and take photos with the locals. Overnight stay at the camp.

Day 3 (4th March) – Ice Festival and International Marathon

In the morning the festival continues with Competition of skaters for short distances (2km). There will also be a Sumo wrestling event on ice, rope pulling competition. Visits the reindeer herders and have lunch with them. These herders make their way south to the festival from the north. Other optional activities includes horse sleigh or dog sled, horse riding, a trip to visit nomadic are available.

Day 4 (5th March) – Flight back to Ulaanbaatar

Return to the capital of Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival into the Chinggis Khan airport, driver awaits you where you will be transferred to the hotel or to your next destination.
