In Mongolia, the first day of the year is the lunar New Year. Which is Tsagaan Sar, meaning “White moon”. The date of the celebrations is determined according to Lunar Calendar. Tsagaan Sar symbolizes the first day of spring, when winter ends and the temperatures begin to get warmer. It corresponds to January or February in the Gregorian calendar, according to moon phases.
It’s a great family celebration that lasts for three days. Tsagaan Sar traditions spans several centuries with the tradition of respecting the elders. The Tsagaan Sar preparations starts one month before hand. Families would come together to make several hundred and even thousands of Buuz (traditional steamed dumpling with either beef, Horse meat or Sheep) and Bansh (smaller steamed dumpling). These are usually served to relatives, neighbors and friends that visits the family. During this celebration, the Gers, barns and yards of animals are expected to be spotless. Women also wear and make new deels (traditional Mongolian clothing) for every family member.
The day starts with a visit to a Mongolian family with your guide. The day before Tsagaan sar is called “Bituun”, which means “New Moon Day”. Be part of the preparation event where you will have the opportunity to learn how to make Mongolian food. In the evening, all the people sit around the table, where a steamed sheep, or “uuts”, and a plate of traditional cookies, “Tsagaan sariin tavgiin idee”, are placed in stacked rows (always an odd number). Dinner is known as the ‘reunion”
dinner, where by traditions, one would have to eat as much as possible! The fuller you eat, the more in abundance you will have. Watch a great Mongolian wrestling competition that is usually broadcasted on television. Transfer back to your hotel.
On the morning of Tsagaan Sar, your driver will pick you up where you will head back to hostess home. It is a day Mongolians wear their nicest national dress “Deel”. Hostess makes traditional milk tea and offer best of it first to the earth, then to their shrine, next to the oldest person of the family or host of the family and then serve each member of the family. And then people greet each other by age category younger people come to elders at traditional way of arm greeting. After you will sit around the table, where a steamed sheep, “uuts”, and a plate of traditional cookies, ”tsagaan sariin tavgiin idee”, placed in stacked rows, and whose number is always odd, were placed. The hostess serves tea with milk and traditional dishes. While the men exchange their snuffbox, people generally discuss the course of the winter. Usually the guests drink three times, usually vodka. After meal, when the guests are ready to leave, the host offers them a gift.
The tradition of Tsagaan Sar is to visit relatives and friends. Hence the day will not be complete without a visit to the countryside. You will easy to learn many different games and enjoy the Mongolian Culture by the end of day.
